Liverpool Premier League
Formed in 2006
The Liverpool Premier League was formed in 2006 after two of Merseyside’s oldest and most famous amateur leagues, the I Zingari League and the Liverpool County Combination League, amalgamated in 2006/07.
The I Zingari League
The I Zingari League was formed in 1895, and the Liverpool County League began in 1909/10 as a result of the Liverpool FA becoming a county-wide organisation. The present Liverpool Premier League is a Level 7 feeder league of the North West Counties League Division One North and South, as part of the National League System.
20 Years later
Twenty years after its formation, the Liverpool Premier League has over four hundred men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ teams and over six thousand registered players. As well as its three senior open-age divisions – the Premier, the Championship, and the Conference – the league provides thirty divisions for younger players, from the u11 to u18 age groups.
From small acorns
Its thirty-six team open-age divisions include long-established clubs such as Skelmersdale United, formed in 1882, a team that has won the league’s predecessor titles on ten occasions. South Liverpool traces its history back to the 1890s, and Waterloo Dock, formed in 1963, has won six Liverpool Premier League titles. The youth and boys’ teams number over four hundred, with the women’s and girls’ teams numbering around forty.
Current Governance
Chairman Steve Goodheart and Secretary Gary Berwick, together with the league’s management committee and willing volunteers, oversee the governance and running not just of the various league divisions but of the many cup competitions.
At senior open-age level these include the Roy Wade Memorial Trophy and the George Mahon Cup, which has been held since 1909/10 in the league’s predecessor days. The I Zingari Premier Division Cup also dates back to the league’s predecessor days, as does the Lord Wavertree Cup.
The league also runs many youth competitions from U19 to U11 level for both boys and girls.
